You Don’t Have to Look a Certain Way to Do a Boudoir Session

There’s a conversation I have with women all the time, and it usually starts the same way.

"I want to do a boudoir session, but..."

The "but" changes from person to person. Sometimes it's, "I want to lose twenty pounds first." Sometimes it's, "I need to tone up." Other times it's, "Maybe after I feel more confident." No matter how it's worded, the message underneath is almost always the same: somewhere along the way, they've been taught that they need to change before they're worthy of being seen.

And I get it.

We're surrounded by messages that tell us our bodies are projects. That confidence is something we earn after we reach a goal. That beauty belongs to a certain size, shape, age, or version of ourselves. It's so common that many women don't even realize how deeply they've internalized those beliefs. They simply assume that one day they'll wake up feeling "ready," and that's when they'll finally give themselves permission to do the things they've always wanted to do.

The problem is that day rarely comes.

Because when one goal is reached, another appears. Five pounds turns into ten. A certain clothing size becomes another. One insecurity is replaced by a different one. The finish line keeps moving, and before long, years have passed while you're still waiting for permission to celebrate yourself.

Here's what I wish every woman knew: your body today is already worthy of being photographed.

Not ten pounds from now.

Not after the gym membership starts paying off.

Not after you feel more confident.

Today. Exactly as you are.

Boudoir was never meant to be reserved for women who fit some narrow definition of beauty. In fact, some of the most powerful sessions I've photographed have been with women who walked through the studio doors carrying insecurities, doubts, and fears about how they would look in front of the camera. They weren't showing up because they felt perfect. They were showing up because they were tired of waiting to feel perfect before allowing themselves to be seen. And something incredible happens when they do.

The woman who says she's not photogenic starts laughing without thinking about the camera. The woman who worries about every angle begins focusing on how she feels instead of how she looks. The woman who wanted to hide parts of herself slowly realizes that those parts deserve kindness too.

The transformation isn't about becoming someone different. It's about letting go of the idea that you were ever supposed to be.

That's why I don't see boudoir as a celebration of perfection. I see it as a celebration of presence. Of showing up with your story, your experiences, your scars, your softness, your strength, and allowing yourself to take up space without apology.

Because the truth is, the most memorable part of a boudoir experience usually isn't the posing, the lingerie, or even the photographs themselves. It's the moment a woman sees one of her images and pauses. The moment she leans in a little closer and says, "Wait... is that really me?"

And the answer is always yes. Yes, that's you. Not a filtered version. Not a perfected version. Not the version you've been promising yourself you'll become someday. Just you.

And for many women, that's the first time they've looked at themselves with admiration instead of criticism.

If you've been waiting to look a certain way before booking a boudoir session, I want you to know that there is no secret standard you need to meet. There is no ideal body type required for confidence, beauty, or self-celebration. There is only the version of you that exists right now, and she is already worthy of being seen.

This experience isn't about changing who you are. It's about remembering her.
